Venture capital funding in wind power sector rises in Q2, 2013

Venture capital (VC) funding in the wind energy sector globally went up sharply during the second quarter of 2013 to $210 million in four deals compared to $16 million in three deals in the first quarter of the year.

According to Mercom Capital Group, a clean energy consulting firm, total funding into the wind sector was $3.5 billion in Q2 2013 including VC funding, debt financing and announced project funding deals.

IFC, a part of the World Bank Group invested in the most deals this quarter with three deals, while Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, EIB, Investec, KfW IPEX-Bank, Nedbank Capital and Standard Bank all invested in two deals each, the report said. Large-scale project funding in the second quarter totaled $3.2 billion in 24 deals compared to $6.2 billion in 29 deals last quarter.
