The Indian Power Sector is subject to the central and state level electricity regulations. Ministry of Power is India’s apex central government body regulating the electrical energy sector in India. The Ministry is responsible for planning, policy formulation, processing of projects for investment decisions, monitoring project implementation, training and manpower development. It is also responsible for the administration of India’s Electricity Act (2003), the Energy Conservation Act (2001) and to undertake such amendments to these Acts, as and when necessary, in conformity with the Indian government’s policy objectives.

The regulations at the central level acts as a yardstick / basis for the respective state governments to issue regulations as per their requirements. Each regulation either issued by the central or at state level is to only encourage power generation.
